2018 Boyce Award Winners

Congratulations to graduate students, Melissa Hale, Jana Jenquin, and Carrie Lomelino, on receiving the 2018 Wanda and Richard Boyce Award for their outstanding graduate research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  It was an extremely close competition, and the faculty decided to confer the award to all three competitors. In this close competition, Carrie Lomelino received the most votes and will represent the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department in the Medical Guild research competition.

Carrie will present at the upcoming 44th annual Medical Guild sponsored graduate student research competition which will be held Monday, April 9th, starting at 1:30 pm, in the auditorium of the Cancer Genetics Building (the CGRC) where she will give a 15-minute presentation and respond to a 5-minute Q&A session on her topic, “Structure-Guided Drug Design of CA IX Selective Inhibitors for Breast Cancer Treatment”.  A panel of faculty judges will assess the students on their presentation in addition to their overall research accomplishments, including publications, presentations, awards and academic performance.

The BMB department’s Boyce Award honors Wanda and Richard Boyce for their dedication to graduate education. Mrs. Wanda Boyce strived to recognize the singular importance of graduate education by supporting the Medical Guild’s research competition and by instituting the graduate student loan program. Professor Richard Boyce devoted his entire career to the education and training of graduate students, and also enriched the lives of young scientists through his service as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduate coordinator. The names of all of the Boyce Award winners are inscribed on a plaque which is on permanent display in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Academic Research Building.
